Peter Kronenberg studied Medicine at Justus Liebig University in Giessen (Germany) and at Faculdade de Ciências Médicas – NOVA University in Lisbon (Portugal). After one year residency in Internal Medicine, he decided to become an army doctor in 2006 and did his urology residency (2008-2014) at Hospital Prof. Doutor Fernando Fonseca in Amadora (Portugal). He has done fellowships at Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit (USA) with Prof. Edson Pontes in 2010, and at Hôpital Tenon in Paris (France) with Prof. Olivier Traxer in 2012.
He regularly attends international and national scientific meetings and has made several presentations in the field of urological oncology, surgical management of difficult cases, female stress urinary incontinence, and on laser lithotripsy. He has been regularly invited as faculty member at several urological meetings, making several presentations as well as the head organizer of a hands-on training course in flexible ureterorenoscopy.
Peter Kronenberg has published book chapters and several articles as first author in renowned urological journals such as The Journal of Urology, BJU International, Urology, World Journal of Urology, Journal of Endourology and Case Reports in Urology. One of his last papers published by The Journal of Urology promises to change the current practice in laser lithotripsy throughout the world.
He has been repeatedly abstract reviewer for the EAU congress, in particular, for the New Technologies section. He is also reviewer for several urological journals such as the Journal of Endourology, European Urology, World Journal of Urology, Brazilian Journal of Urology. He is currently editorial board member of the World Journal of Urology. Since 2024 he is an Associate Member of the EAU Section of Endourology.
He has won several awards and honorable mentions, including 1st prize at the 12th Workshop of Urological Oncology of the Portuguese EORTC group (2009), 1st prize for Best Podium Presentation and 3rd prize for Best Video Presentation at the 2013 National Congress of the Portuguese Association of Urology. He was also awarded 1st prize for Best Video Presentation at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association, the Clinical Research Award at the 2nd Meeting of the EAU Section of Urolithiasis (EULIS) in 2013, Best Posters at the 2015 and 2016 Annual EAU meetings, and recently one of his abstracts was among the six Best Abstracts of the thousands presented at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association. On October 2016 one of his articles won the Article of the Year 2015 Award, given by the World Journal of Urology and by the Societé Internationale d’Urologie.
Currently, he is focusing his basic research on the technical aspects of laser lithotripsy and is actively involved in the development of Super Pulsed Thulium Fiber Laser Technology, a breakthrough in laser lithotripsy. He is co-founder and former president of PETRA (Progress in Endourology, Technology and Research Association). He works as an urologist at the Hospital CUF Descobertas and lives in Lisbon, with his wife, their two children and one cat.
